Week Four of Portfolio Project

 02/28/22

Updates!!!

Today I have no updates :)

Reflection on the production process:

The production process is going well. Definitely a fun process but yet stressful project to go through. I am pretty confident about my idea and vision for the project. I still have not thought about a name though! It's just hard and my brain is just not working with this portion of the project. If I had to say what has been the hardest part of the project so far it would be picking the name of the film. Naming a film has to be an important thought process because you can't make you're filming name boring or else no one would view it. It literally bothers me that I cant think of a name oh my god. Anyways other than that production is a little delayed due to SAT week and birthday week haha. But other than that the process has been going well. I will have to think of a film name by next week, I might ask friends for name ideas and find inspiration from there. I also have to find fonts for the subtitles and the title and credits of the film. Talk to you later!!

Week Three of Portfolio Project

 02/27/22

Updates!!!

I watched some Wes Anderson films and really like the idea of adding bright and beautiful colors to my film. So I will, later on, do research on how to layer colors on a film well. I still have to choose the song and title of the film. Do research on different fonts to use for the credits and title. But so far I've been stuck on the song and title ugh.

Blogging Schedule:

I don't really have a set schedule for the filming process, but I want to be filming before spring break. So the weekend of March the 12 and 13th I plan on beginning the filming process. From then on I plan on editing the film up to the due date. If anything I might push back the date of the filming because I want to use my time effectively and use most of it to edit it and possibly have time to make changes. I might use this weekend and next to begin filming. On the weekend of the 5th-6th, I will film what I have planned and scripted so far and if I'm not satisfied with the outcome of each scene, I will make detailed changes to the scenes I wouldn't think are good enough for the film. Then after the changes have been made or problems have been adjusted I will officially film it the weekend after and from the 12 of March to the due date I will be editing it and adding the color layers that make the film look beautiful. Well, that's all I got for today, talk to you later!!!

Week Three of Portfolio Project

 02/26/22

Updates!!!

Today I have no updates, I am just rewriting the script in the correct format.

Official Script:

I am using this website called celtx to help me create my script in the correct format. For the script, I am only including the part that has dialogue because there are only certain parts of the play that has dialogue I would say it's about 4 or 5 scenes.

You can view it by clicking on this link and it will take you to the script or I will include a picture of it the script here. I only decided to write the script on the parts where I do have dialogue because writing it for the whole film outline will be difficult since most of the film does not have dialogue just actions and background music. If I do change up the dialogue I will adjust the change and reupload the link and pictures of the script.  Talk to you later!!!

Week Three of Portfolio Project

 02/25/22

Updates!!!

Today Mrs.Stoklosa talked to me about my blog and film idea and after speaking with her I feel much better about my idea.
New ideas:
Well, to start off I am taking everything that has to do with school off so throwing away that thought. Also, I have to incorporate things that represent the character's home country where ill be filming which is in a kitchen. Then at the last minute, the girl's friend will come to her house and the girl's mother comes into the kitchen and speaks in Spanish so the friend would not understand.

Storyboard draft:

Not going to lie this had been a little hard, I couldn't come to terms with what I wanted to draw, and just putting my idea overall on paper was challenging but I managed to pull through. This is the storyboard draft I have made so far. The reason why it's not permanent is that when I film there may be changes because of the timing or new ideas that came to my mind randomly. I will give updates if there are any changes.

In my storyboard, I elaborate my ideas and try to draw out and organize my shot and angles ideas that I should follow when filming the opening. I'm not 100% sure I will go with the ideas because the vision will not be complete until I film it and could possibly make some changes. Talk to you later!!!

Week Three of Portfolio Project

 02/23/22

Updates!!!

This weekend I plan on working with my friend on some drafts just to test out the shots I have in mind before I draw them out on my storyboard sheet. I will also watch some Wes Anderson films because I am really inspired by the color he adds to his film, they are bright and just add such a pretty touch to the film.

These are the steps I followed to write about my outline.
Outline Plans:

Script:
My opening film is about Carolina who is a first-generation daughter who was raised by her Hispanic family is going through many life changes. The changes include dressing differently, having different friends, and basically just being untraditional things her family is not used to.
Character Descriptions:
(These are the characters who will be featured in the opening film, I might make some changes because of the limited time I have.)
Carolina is a girl who is currently 16 years old and is in her junior year of high school. She is a typical student who focuses on her work and does very well in school. Carolina really hopes to satisfy her family by being the best version of herself. She likes to spend time to herself but at times likes to go out. She has many hobbies but one of her favorite ones is cooking, she has always looked up to her mother and learned to cook from watching her and accompanying her every time she would cook.
Juana is Carolinas mother who works all the time to be able to support her family as well as her father too, because of this Carolina cooks breakfast for her sibling Diego and herself. Juana is a very traditional person who goes by the traditional rules like male and female marriage and nothing in-between as well as the rest of Carolina's family (like most Hispanic families do).
Martzia is Carolina's new friend who her family does not approve of. Martzia has a different appearance than Carolina, she has piercings and is a very bold person with a bold personality which includes having no filter. Martzia always picks up Carolina even though Juana doesn't approve of it, her mother doesn't trust Martzia to be driving around Carolina.
Main Conflict:
The main type of conflict in this film is Character vs. Character. Carolina throughout the film starts changing but not for the worse she is just growing up and her family is not used to the changes Carolina is inheriting from her new friends. So, in the movie, there's a constant tension between Carolina and her family as they try to protect her from something they think is bad but it's truly not.
Obstacles The Character Runs Into:
The main character Carolina runs into many obstacles throughout the film because that is what the coming of age films are all about. Carolina faces most of her obstacles with her family, she starts to argue with them like she never has before. She defended herself and her friend to prove to her family that her change would not change who she really is.
Final Part:
Moving towards the end of the film the resolution part, Carolina directly confronts her family about the situation because she got tired of arguing with them daily. As part of her resolution, she formally introduced Martzia to her family and explained to them who she is and how her appearance does not always match her intentions. Carolina's parents slowly start to become understanding of the changes she is going through because she is growing up.

Week Two of Portfolio Project

 02/19/22

Updates!!

I am now going to watch more inspirational films but so far the new idea is going great and I'm more comfortable with it than the one before.

Technical Elements:

When it comes to technical elements you have to think about the film type as in genre, shots camera and angle techniques, the lightning, and color in the film, the way the scenes are laid out and found editing. The shots are the building elements of a film and it's important that the viewer understands the meaning of the scene and specific shots would help them understand. The angles serve almost the same purpose as the shots but it includes building interactions and relationships between the characters. There are specific lighting techniques that help build a specific mood in certain parts of the film. Color has a deeper meaning it resonates with mood and sometimes certain periods in a movie. Those are the important elements I am looking to include in my film. Color for me is the most important thing I am thinking of at the moment. I would love to have beautiful colors in my film and with that, I am using inspiration from Wes Anderson.

Example/ Reflection:

Wes Anderson is my inspiration with the color element. In his films, we use color so well and perfectly, I enjoy most of his films because the color he adds onto it and the filters are just so beautiful. I will do my mise-en-scene in a very bright yet colorful kitchen and if its not too much add a filter on top of it just to make the film look very colorful and welcoming.

Planning:

I have to do some more research this week on the effects of color in films and what attracts the eye and what goes with the overall mood, but since we already went through this in class I'll just review my notes. This upcoming week I have to prepare my storyboard and maybe go through my new idea with Mrs. Stoklosa and see what she thinks. I also have to look at what good techniques I can take in to film a good intro that has to do with cooking food. Talk to you later!!

Week Two of Portfolio Project

 02/18/22

Updates!!!

Today there aren't many updates I still have to watch some films that are based on the coming of age genre for inspiration.

Characters in the coming of age genre:

Coming of age films are defined by the qualities of the characters, which are dictated by the genre. The protagonists are young adolescent teenagers. Characters go on emotional and spiritual journeys, and their character arcs frequently range from innocence to self-discovery. The characters in these films  are frequently experiencing sexual awakenings at time (like "Call Me By Your Name") throughput the plot, which is frequently blocked by a slew of challenges and emotions that distinguish that as a coming of age film.
Other movies like "Lady Bird" its not always sexual awakenings but rebellious ones that young people sometimes have while growing up.

Character Reflection:

For my characters I want them to resemble their Hispanic blood but at the same time show them developing and changing not for the worse but for the better. My character who I think will be named Carolina will be a bright student and someone who loves to cook but to make an emotional dialogue gets with the wrong crowd according to her hispanic parents. Carolina will not have a sexuak awakening but an emotional one. Hispanic families like tradition from opposite sex marriage to looks. With that Carolina being the first generation child that goes to school in America everything changes for her and her family. She meet new people who have a different appearance than her and her parents are threatened by the fact that Carolina is changing and growing up.

Plot Aspect:

The plot aspect is the way you build your story to make sense, so in other words the exposition, rising action, conflict, climax, falling action, and resolution. The exposition begins with introducing the person, their background, and the setting in which they are in. To build my opening film correctly I have to focus on these aspects to introduce a good exposition. Then its the conflict, the conflict doesn't always have to consist of disagreements and fights but its difficulty that the characters encounters during the movie. The climax is the turning point of the story this part could leave the viewers questionable about what will or could happen next. After comes the falling action where the problem or conflict falls into place and is solved. Last comes the resolution where the outcome is shown and solved.

Plot Aspect Reflection:

For my plot it will start with Carolina introducing herself by just doing her most favorite hobby which is cooking before she gets picked up by her new friend Martzia before school. The opening film will consist of those events. The conflict would be her family not approving of the new friends he has mad but are afraid they'll create a problem bringing the thought of controlling who she hangsout with even if its for the correct intentions. The climax is when the family finally is able to confess to Carolina their thoughts on her new life and she feels offended by the fact that her family doesn't approve of her or her friends. Falling action is when her family starts to listen to her and accepts the changes they will be going through living a new life in a new country. Lastly the resolution is when the family is okay with the new and confident Carolina and they are satisfied with the person she has become thanks to her new friends. I put the plot into simpler words but obviously its way more specific than this. Talk to you later!!

Week Two of Portfolio Project

 02/17/22

Updates!!!

Today I decided to change my film idea. My idea changed because I realized some of the challenges I had on my previous idea were out of reach to fix.

New Film Idea!!!

So, my new film will be based on a coming of age movie of a young girl who is starting to become a different person based on the people she hangs out with but to make it different it'll be based on a girl who is a first-generation American in a Hispanic household. With that, the family starts to get really worried about the people the girl starts meeting which can be people who have tattoos, heterosexuals, males and etc. Most first-generation kids that come from Hispanic households could relate to this. As changing their ways and their families too. So, the girl faces many challenges as she tries to make her family accept who she is and her ways of living life. My intro will invite the audience to meet the main character who will be cooking breakfast for herself which is one of her favorite hobbies. The intro idea could change if I get inspired by something else but other than that it's set to be this.

Coming of age genre:

The coming of age genre has many characteristics that define the film and the meaning of what it is to transition from a young human to an older one in society. With movies that are based on coming of age, there are lessons and realistic events that some people experience that make the genre so relatable to many people. Specific characteristics that have to be included with the coming of age factors is the personal growth the main character makes in the film it could be by learning lessons or changing for the better by making wrong choices. Although most films could be able young transitioning to old some can just be about self-improvement and just growing as a person in the world.

Example 1:

In the movie "Dirty Dancing" the main character Francis who goes by Baby does something completely out of the box and her comfort zone which causes her to try new things and be good at those things. In situations like these, the character gains so much confidence in themselves which contributes to the coming of age genre where someone changes for the better. The coming of age genre in this film relates to what I am going for which is a person who goes through self-improvement and finds themselves because people around them pushed them out of their box.

Johnny played a big role in the movie as a coming of age genre because he impacted Baby's life by taking her out of her shell. In every coming-of-age genre movie, there's always that one character that impacts the main character greatly.

Back to Coming of age genre:

When it comes to filming a coming-of-age film there are three important characteristics those are character development, dialogue, and social commentary. Like I've said previously character development is essential in these specific films. The characters should go through emotional or mental dilemmas that in the future could benefit them in becoming better people in society. For dialogue, there has to be emotions and feelings that drive the story throughout the film.

Example 2:

The second film that I looked into that's considered to be a coming of age film is "Call Me By Your Name". This film is about two guys who fall in love and one of them is a teenager and the other is an adult. The young man falls in love for the first time with the other character. The characteristics that this film has been all of the ones I named above. The young boy faces problems most people his age encounter at certain points in life. There's an emotional dialogue between the two main characters and there's character development as the young man learns stuff about himself that he never knew.

Reflection:

This research has led me to find out the three important factors of the coming of age genre. As I start writing my plot and making the opening film I will think of character development, dialogue, and social commentary. In my film opening, I want to introduce my main character obviously before their big character development so I have to find ways to show that before in the opening. Talk to you later!

Week Two of Portfolio Project

02/14/22

Updates!!

Today I talked to Mrs. Stoklosa about the questions I had about the music and the copyright rules. Since I am using music that was composed by artists a long time ago, I wasn't sure about its copyright rules. My friend Carolyn, who will be starring in my film opening, mentioned that if the music was composed 100 years ago, it would not be a problem. So I talked to Mrs. Stoklosa today about that and she said if the piece is owned by someone I do need to ask for permission and if it's not then it's okay to use it.

Genre Research

I am currently doing some research on the genre drama since my film will be a drama film. On the website that will be linked below, I am reading about two drama films that focus on mental illness. My film will focus on the negative aspects of doing what you love the most, which will be body dysmorphia in my project. When reading about what drama really is, I really think this film falls into this category. The genre drama focuses really on specific life situations, the films really describe human beings being at their worst or best state. I read this in the second article "Dramas are serious, full of conflict, and continually push the boundaries of the plot by raising the stakes"  this helped me more with the plot because the drama genre obviously has to have a specific conflict that would affect the character. From the research I have done my goal in the film is to show real-life scenarios people go through that drive them to not be mentally healthy and those are the factors that build up the drama genre. I also looked into drama movies and shows and there a various shows and movies that deal with mental health. Films like Euphoria really do emphasize the drama aspects as it deals with drug abuse, alcohol abuse, emotional abuse, etc. Watching drama films and movies will be part of my research because watching specific films will help me be more inspired and give me ideas. Right now my genre research is not specific because I am having second thoughts on my ideas.

Reflection after the research

I am thinking about my ideas and honestly, it seems a little complicated, and I will have to change a few things. Maybe when I watch some drama films it will give me more ideas and possibly lead me into changing my mind on the whole film. I want my film to look artsier and have more color so I'll look into more ideas.

Week One Blog on Portfolio Project

First Thoughts

This week my teacher introduced the portfolio project for my Aice Media class. At first, I honestly felt a bit overwhelmed and nervous because I had such an important project due at a certain point. I had thought about finding a partner for this project but then realized it's best to work on this by myself to see how far I've come in this course and really take in the knowledge I learned throughout the year.

 Inspiration

During the week, I have been thinking about my film opening. I thought about movies, genres, and the overall mood I'm looking for. The first movie i for some reason thought of is black swan it brings such a powerful message to me that some might not seem to get. The black swan is a movie about a ballet company practicing and having auditions for an opening role that is the swan queen which is basically the main character of the play or the most important character. In the movie, the main character Nina has gone psychotic or a bit crazy because she overworked her mind and body for getting the swan queen role perfect and went through challenges with her mother and dance mates. For my film opening, I'm striving to have a similar approach but with less thriller in it. My movie will be more focused on what you love that can hurt you the most. Nina the main character loved ballet so much and worked so hard for the spot till she killed herself because she had gone crazy.

Plans

For my plans, the film has inspired me to create a deep and true film about how not just dancers but athletes have their mental and physical health go down because they want everything to be perfect and how they sometimes put too much work into something. I have not yet figured out the name of the film but I'm thinking of a name that has to do with loving too hard that you can die something in between those lines. For my plans, I have thought about music and dance. Since I am being inspired by the cons of being in the ballet world I have a friend who dances ballet and she had mentioned to me how dancing the ballet causes body dysmorphia for most dancers as their presence and posture are very important when it comes to looks and techniques. So my plan is to create a film dedicating it to ballet dancers and how much they struggle but yet do it because they loved it so much.

How I plan on making the film

My film will feature my friend Carolyn playing the piano which she dedicates her dance to with inserts of her dancing the ballet showing powerful and true emotions. The piano music will be a representation of her feelings about ballet. For example, if the piano music starts off slow her moves will be slow and graceful but as the music gets hard and powerful her moves will get more intense, bigger, and more powerful. I might want to ask her to wear a mask that represents her emotions which would be a happy-looking mask at the beginning of the intro and by the end it'll be a sad mask. First I will record her playing the piano music (not sure if it'll be counted as copyrighted I have to speak to my teacher about it) then it'll be multiple shots of Carolyn playing the piano with inserts of her dancing ballet.

Goals

My goal is to show the viewers how love is such a powerful force and/ or feeling that could overcome a person and possibly kill them. I want to show the public how much hard work dancers and athletes put into their work for multiple hours to the point where their mental health is not healthy and could affect them by getting body dysmorphia.

Music Marketing Blog

When it comes to designing a music marketing campaign and coming up with various ideas to promote new and upcoming artists, it comes with many factors of research on other artists and what specific audiences like and don't like.

At the beginning of the music marketing project, we started off with finding research of our genre which is country. Country is a very wide genre that holds many age differences from teens to adults to elders. So we wanted to find two artists from two major country music production companies and do some research on their marketing and distribution techniques to be inspired. The two companies we found that best fit our interest is Big Machine Records and Bloodshot Records. Both production companies have a variety of popular artists and their new releases and the latest news on the front page of their website.

Big Machine Records layout shows new releases their artists have released recently:

Bloodshot Records layout features their artists latest music and music videos:

Big Machine Records and Bloodshot records have their similarities and differences. With Big Machine they are in a way more popular than Bloodshot Records but that is because every production company has its own way to market its work and some ways are more effective than others. Big Machine uses the media more to promote their work and Bloodshot uses other things like press kits. What we concluded based on our research is that the most effective way to make our artist known is to use social media as much as we can and promote the artist as frequently as possible but yet make it look casual.

When it came to brainstorming and planning on how we were going to put our artist out into the world we thought to ourselves what image we want, what audience do we want, and does our artist have a goal. We came up with the idea that we want to have a diverse artist that any gender, age, and person can listen to them. When it comes to having a diverse audience our artists have a big chance of being more popular. We want them to have an innocent and fun image so all ages can enjoy them, which means to remain pg-13 throughout their career. For our target audience, we want to range from young to as old as it gets, so when we want to distribute our content it will be released on various platforms in which most people of any age could find them.

Now that we found our target audience we can design our social media accounts, website, and merch. Everything in the music production and marketing industry relies on the audience, it is safe to say the audience is the most important factor because it depends on your success. We chose various platforms that would incorporate with for target audience goal. With that, we chose Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. When it came to choosing the social media platforms we had to really think about what each of those platforms has in common and what they don't. The most obvious thing they do not have in common is their audience. So we chose Instagram to enhance the younger target audience since most Instagram users are young, and the same goes for Twitter and Facebook.

Twitter layout:

Website layout:

Our goal with technological convergence is to really enhance country music but at the same time be different than other typical country artists. Our websites and social media platforms would include all of our information about the artists and their music, merch, other social media platforms, and even future tour dates.

When it came to producing the music video we wanted to choose a place that has that country outside environment with animals, fire, and wood. The first music video has to be thought out well to get the target audience's attention. We also wanted to include props and the wardrobe has to match the aesthetic we were looking for in the video which is in country. In the music video, we wanted to have the artists have a storyline yet promote them and show their personalities to the audience. So to incorporate and comfortable and fun personality we decided to let the artists be in certain parts of the video where the storyline wasn't really relevant like the time when they'd be standing open and alone singing.

The photo is an example that enhances the country aesthetic goal we have with the cowboy hat, flannel, jeans, and the outdoors:

For the post-production parts, most shots and techniques were focused on the artist's face to promote them. The main character of the video was the artist we are trying to promote rather than the other two side characters featured in the movie. We wanted to add that warm tone to the video yet make it look casual and comfortable. The music video was made to look fun to the point where the audience enjoys it enough to watch it more than one time, which causes the film to have an increase in views.

Our goal in the presentation was the convince our audience of the strategies and reasons why and how we will promote this artist. We give various examples of different production and artist we are inspired by and show examples of what our social media accounts would look like.

What I learned from the project is how important an audience and social media play in the music industry when it comes to marketing. Social media is the outlet to make it out there and to easily promote someone more quickly and efficiently. Important aspects I can carry on to the portfolio project is to really take inspiration from other people's work. I find that inspiration can lead to creative ideas that then lead to success. Also, the research that was done at first really helped to get to know how the music industry works and how much they use social media to their advantage.
